The first step in becoming your own boss is to figure out what goods or services you want to sell.
You start by finding what I call your “sweet spot.”
Your sweet spot is the place where what you love to do (and do well) meets what people are willing to pay for you to do.
What you love + what you do well + able to monetize = sweet spot. What you love + what you do well + able to monetize = sweet spot. Click To Tweet
Remember this formula as you do your lifework today. Because you need to have all three elements to find your sweet spot.
For example, I love to nap. But since no one is going to pay me for that, then it’s not my sweet spot. While I love to sing, I’ve been told on several occasions that I could not carry a note to save my life. So a solo career headlining for Bey is probably not in the stars.
I hella love writing, teaching, speaking, coaching (aka communications) about all things finance and feminism and I’ve been paid by companies and individuals to help them elevate their financial acumen and their understandings of feminism. In essence, I found my sweet spot.
So for today’s lifework is help you get a good idea of what your sweet spot is.
Here are two options to help you find your sweet spot.
Option #1: Use the formula
What you love + what you do well + able to monetize = sweet spot.
When you use this option, ask yourself some of the following questions:
- Can I see myself doing this for a few years?
- How do I know that I do it well? What evidence do I have?
- Have other people been paid to do the same thing?
Option #2: Text, email, or call ten people in your network and tell them that you want to start a side business and tell them you need their input in finding your sweet spot.

The Mama Bear Principle: Mama Bears are protective of their cubs and their crew. And that’s exactly how I feel about our community. Throughout the Happy Finances Challenge, I may recommend some products and service and receive some form of compensation. However, I would NEVER suggest them unless I truly believed they were useful or helpful.
