One of the most difficult things for most people to do is talk about themselves. We don’t want to come across as obnoxious, by rattling off all of the great things about ourselves. But, we don’t want to admit the not so great things about ourselves either. Have you ever had a job interview, or even a date (sometimes they feel like a job interview) and you were asked about a weakness or an area you’d like to improve? If you are like me, one thousand things come to mind at once. I don’t want to admit any of them. Sometimes we won’t admit our flaws, not even to ourselves.
But why do we feel bad about our flaws? Is it because others see them as imperfections and we want to be seen as perfect? Or is it something we don’t like within ourselves, but can’t seem to change it? While it is possible to grow and change, here are 3 things to do with your flaws RIGHT NOW!!
Admit you have them! The first step to changing anything is to admit it. Do you have a short temper or don’t speak up for yourself? Are you always late or lack discipline? If so, admit it to yourself!! Once you identify and accept your flaws you can then begin the road to fixing those flaws! However be very clear, you should change for yourself and not for others.
Decide if YOU are ok with them! Flaws make us unique, some may even say our imperfections make us who we are. You should understand that we all have flaws. If you choose to change, do so because of the life the life you want. If you have been called “too fat” or “too skinny”, ask yourself first are you happy with your body. Next consider does your body prevent you from being healthy, buying certain clothes, or being comfortable around others. Thinking about how your “flaws” impact your life and lifestyle can help you decide if your should embrace them or work to erase them.
Share them with others! At the end of the day you can only be you. We can try to put a representative in place of who we really are, but eventually our true self will show. Hiding our flaws gives a false representation of who we are. When our true self is revealed it can lead to broken trust and ruined relationships. Let people know who you are upfront. They can take it or leave it. We all have friends and family that have flaws-too nosey, always late, spoiled, stubborn-but we love them anyway. Those who accept you as you are, are the ones that deserve the best of you and deserve to be a part of your life.
At the end of the day, you need to be happy with yourself. Will everyone love your flaws? Nope, and that’s fine. By being who you are, you will attract people who will accept you and all of your flaws.
